Steve Monks
About
Texas-born and North Carolina-bound. Steve Monks moved to NC as soon as he could (with all due apologies to his family back in Texas) and brought nearly four decades of legal experience with him. After trying more than 500 cases and managing firms in both states, Steve decided to bring his practice home—literally.
Today, he works out of his “shoffice” (a shed-turned-office) in his backyard. This shift allows him to stay dedicated to his clients while helping his wife, and administrative assistant, Yvonne, care for his mother-in-law at their home who has Alzheimer’s.
A Practical Approach to the Law
Steve is licensed in both North Carolina and Texas, and his background is as hands-on as it gets. While his career has covered everything from criminal law to immigration, he has intentionally narrowed his focus to the areas where he believes he can make the most meaningful impact:
- Estate Planning & Probate: He concentrates on wills, trusts, and helping families navigate the probate process with clarity and affordability.
- Small Business Representation: Having managed multi-office firms and sat on various corporate boards, and as a certificated mediator, Steve provides straightforward, practical advice for small business owners who need a lawyer who "gets it."
Community & Connection
Steve has spent years assisting Spanish-speaking communities, whether through legal seminars, Spanish-language radio, or pro bono work with organizations like El Centro Hispano. He believes good legal advice should be accessible and non-intimidating—never overpriced or filled with unnecessary jargon.
The Pre-Law Years
Steve’s perspective is shaped by a life well-lived. Before he was a published author and legal presenter, he spent time as a defensive driving instructor, a disc jockey, and a cheerleader for the University of Houston’s legendary Phi Slamma Jamma basketball team.
His philosophy is simple: he may not have seen it all, but after 37 years, he’s seen enough to help you make confident decisions about your future. Go Coogs.
