At Monks Law Firm, our mission is simple: make quality legal guidance accessible, affordable, and straightforward. Since opening the firm in 2002, we have focused primarily on wills, trusts, and estate planning for individuals and families in Raleigh, Durham, and surrounding areas. We are also licensed to serve clients in Texas.

Estate planning does not have to be complicated or expensive. We believe clients deserve honest advice, clear explanations, and fair pricing, without unnecessary services or inflated fees.

Meet Attorney Steve Monks

Steve Monks brings more than 37 years of legal experience to the firm. Born in Texas, he later made North Carolina home and has dedicated decades to serving individuals, families, and organizations.

Over the course of his career, Steve has:

  • Tried more than 500 cases
  • Handled thousands of additional legal matters
  • Worked in and managed small and mid-sized law firms, including firms with multiple offices
  • Served on boards of directors for nonprofit organizations and businesses
  • Provided extensive pro bono services
  • Served on the board of directors of the Group Legal Services Association
  • Presented continuing legal education programs
  • Published legal articles in various media
  • Earned certification as a mediator

His legal background is broad. Over the years, his practice has included immigration matters, criminal law, family law, traffic ticket defense, and civil litigation. Today, he focuses primarily on wills, trusts, and estate planning, while continuing to assist clients with selected civil matters, mediation, criminal and traffic representation, and small business law. He no longer handles immigration or family law matters.

Steve now operates as a solo practitioner from his backyard “shoffice,” a shed transformed into a professional office space. This arrangement allows him to maintain lower overhead costs and offer more flexible scheduling as well as assist in caring for his mother-in-law, who has Alzheimer’s and lives with his family. That personal caregiving experience informs his understanding of elder planning and the importance of preparing for incapacity.
